St. Germaine plan protects first responders from harassment while on the job
RELEASE|June 11, 2026

State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine this week advanced legislation to protect first responders from harassment, threats, and interference while they are performing their duties.

“When people call 911, it’s often one of the worst moments of their lives,” St. Germaine said. “The last thing first responders should have to deal with is someone intentionally getting in the way while they’re trying to help. Whether they’re responding to a crash, a fire, or a medical emergency, they need to be focused on the job at hand.”

Under the plan, a person who receives a verbal warning from a first responder and then knowingly remains within 25 feet with the intent to interfere, threaten, or harass could face criminal penalties. The legislation includes enhanced penalties if the violation results in injury or death.

“This legislation is about giving first responders the ability to do their jobs safely and effectively,” St. Germaine said. “People have the right to observe what is happening, but there is a difference between observing and deliberately interfering. When emergency personnel are trying to protect lives and keep people safe, we should not tolerate conduct that puts those efforts at risk.”

The legislation is now before the Senate for further consideration.
