Rep. St. Germaine: Selfridge groundbreaking is a big win for Macomb County
RELEASE|October 28, 2026

State Rep. Alicia St. Germaine today celebrated a groundbreaking at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, calling it a major step toward protecting local jobs, strengthening national defense and securing the base’s future.

“Selfridge isn’t just a military base. It’s part of who we are in Macomb County,” St. Germaine said. “Generations of families have grown up with aircraft flying overhead. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve run outside just to see what’s flying by! And judging by my neighbors’ Facebook posts, I’m not alone. We love seeing those fighter jets and big tankers in the sky.”

Earlier this year, St. Germaine supported a state funding package that helped secure a $152 million investment to realign and expand Selfridge’s runway for new F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets and KC-46 Pegasus refueling tankers. The improvements will help ensure the base has the infrastructure needed to support these critical missions for years to come.

“You can’t expect a military base to have a future if you’re not willing to invest in it,” St. Germaine said. “This is about protecting jobs, supporting our economy and keeping Selfridge strong for generations.”

St. Germaine emphasized that the project was made possible through cooperation among military leaders and federal, state and local officials. She said the groundbreaking represents an investment not only in the base’s future, but also in the service members and families who make Selfridge such an important part of the community.

“We’re not just building a runway. We’re investing in the next generation of Selfridge and the future of Macomb County,” St. Germaine said. “To the brave men and women who serve and the families behind them, we’re proud of you, we support you, and Macomb County will always have your back.”
