State Rep. John Roth has introduced legislation to protect unemployment insurance for seasonal workers experiencing a temporary layoff.
“Seasonal workers are critical to many of our industries here up north and throughout the state,” said Roth (R-Interlochen). “Important local businesses, such as marinas and landscaping, can only operate in fair weather conditions. When our seasonal workers do experience layoffs, many will have the opportunity to return to these businesses after the harsh conditions of winter have receded. These are loyal employees, and the state’s job-search requirement should never come into conflict with their commitment to their place of work.”
House Bill 6420 would amend Michigan law by including weather as a factor for waiving the job-search requirements for workers experiencing a temporary layoff.
“Business owners in my community have reached out to me because they want to retain their hardworking employees,” Roth said. “These workers shouldn’t be put at a disadvantage because of the weather. When travel is limited and the temperatures are dangerously low, many of these services simply cannot operate. This update to the law will give the state more flexibility in recognizing the realities of seasonal work and weather-dependent industries here in Michigan.”
HB 6420 was referred to the House Committee on Economic Competitiveness for consideration.
